"The lowbrow Carpenter oeuvre will endure, ultimately, not just on the strength of its former cultural relevance, but because an artfully executed genre film is still something rare." This is a broad and rather untrue statement. You obviously don't watch much Hong Kong cinema, a modern-day bastion of the artful genre film. Catch up on the oeuvre of people like Johnny To before making such sweeping pronouncements.
